Storm clouds gathering over a high Himalayan ridge

The opening pages

"Let me tell you about the night I thought I was going to die."

Twenty-two years old. A broken-down truck at eighteen thousand feet on the Tibetan plateau, in a whiteout, with darkness closing in and the temperature falling fast. No phones. No GPS — this was forty years ago. Not a single person on the planet knew where we were.

And yet, strangely, inexplicably, I also felt completely alive.

In those quiet, frightened hours, somewhere above the roof of the world, I asked two questions I have never stopped asking:

Who am I?

Why am I here?

01What it is

A book about creation.

Not creativity in the artistic sense, although that's part of it. Creation in the deepest sense: the capacity to imagine something that doesn't yet exist and bring it into being.

You are a creator. That is not an aspiration. It is a fact. The only question is whether you're creating consciously or unconsciously — from your deepest vision, or your deepest fears.

Built on Joseph Campbell's monomyth and 45+ years of building, Hero's Journey hands the entrepreneur a map of the interior — and shows how the answers don't live in philosophy. They live in the daily choices you make about how to show up, what to create, and who you're becoming in the process.

What you'll find inside

  • Why the entrepreneur's path is the Hero's Journey — not as a metaphor, but as a structural fact.
  • The forces that drive you, the fears that hold you back, and the beliefs running your decisions before you know you're making them.
  • Creation as a discipline: how to imagine what doesn't yet exist and bring it into being, consciously rather than by accident.
  • Four decades of stories from the field — Himalayan plateaus, boardrooms, and the quiet work of building a life that matters.
02The structure

Four movements of the journey.

The book follows the arc every founder walks — from the call, through the trials, to the return.

03A few of the stories inside

Forty years of stories from the field.

The Accidental Holy Man

Introduction

The Accidental Holy Man

Racing a full moon to find a hidden Himalayan valley, Mark stops to give two strangers a lift — a delay he's certain will cost him everything. One of them turns out to be the head of the festival, and hands him the keys to film it all.

The Feast at the End of the World

Part One · The Awakening

The Feast at the End of the World

Seven years old at a Tongan earth-oven feast, a suburban Sydney boy tastes a wider world for the first time — and decides, then and there, that he wants all of it.

Stillness on the Bridge

Part One · The Awakening

Stillness on the Bridge

Nine years old, crossing a wooden bridge to go fishing, the rhythm of light on water stops his mind completely. No past, no future. His first taste of timeless presence.

The Storm and the Dhoni

Part One · The Awakening

The Storm and the Dhoni

A monsoon hits in the Maldives. His friends read the storm as the whole story and turn back — and miss the two perfect weeks waiting on the other side of the reef.

The Valley Found Twice

Part Two · The Heart

The Valley Found Twice

At seventeen he stumbles into a valley like a Monet, then loses the way back for twenty years. Decades later he buys a piece of land and weeps before the car has stopped. It is the same valley.

The Scooter on the Veranda

Part Three · The Craft

The Scooter on the Veranda

Years after he and Michelle pinned a dream of their home to a board, Mark notices a detail he never consciously chose — a scooter against a pillar — standing exactly where the picture put it.

04On Mark, and the thinking behind the book

The first endorsement is in.

This is the book I wish I'd had when I was starting out. Mark Falzon writes from the inside of the entrepreneurial journey, with the soul of a poet and the clarity of someone who has lived every step. It will move you, and it will quietly change how you see your work.
